What's currently
on the desk.

A monthly snapshot: books open, songs on repeat, drafts not yet ready. Less than a journal entry, more than a tweet. Updated when it stops being honest.

Reading

Three open at once
  1. 001 Letters to a Young Poet Rainer Maria Rilke Re-read

A thin book I keep going back to at different ages, and it keeps answering a different question than the one I brought. At twenty it was permission. Now it reads more like patience.

  2. 002 Rembrandt's Eyes Simon Schama In progress

Seven hundred pages about a man learning how to look. I read it in small doses, the way you would take something strong. It has changed how I stand in front of a painting.

  3. 003 Chasing Shadows Lynn Austin In progress

The Netherlands under occupation. I picked it up after standing in Amsterdam this month, which is a poor reason to choose a book and an excellent reason to finish one.

Listening

Mostly while driving
  1. 001 Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer Ibrahim Ferrer Album

An old man singing like he has all the time in the world, recorded when he very much did not. The whole record is unhurried. I have started driving slower because of it.

  2. 002 Como Fue Ibrahim Ferrer Single track

Off the same record, but it gets its own line. Some songs are music and some songs are a room you walk into. This one is a room.

On the desk

Drafts in motion
  1. 001 Taming the Dragon, Book One Published

Finished, and out in the world. Written with K. Keller, which is its own story and not this one. The strange part was never that it got done — it is that it got done in a voice neither of us had on our own.

  2. 002 Taming the Dragon, Book Two In progress

Deeper and colder than the first. I know how this one ends, which I am told is cheating. I have never once known how a thing ends and still had it come out the way I planned.

On the road

Or soon to be
  1. 001 Sedona, October Booked · Oct

Red rock after a summer of water and sand dunes. I am curious what a landscape does when it has no ocean to lean on.

  2. 002 Orlando, December Family · a week

The same week we always do. Not a trip so much as a place the family agrees to be in at the same time, once a year.

This page is a promise made in August about what October will actually look like. The honesty rate hovers, historically, around 62%. August is an optimistic month.
